Moscow, 18 January 2023. Forty-five foreign brands, predominantly Turkish, have announced plans to enter the Russian market. Nine of these have already opened their first stores in Russia. Potential newcomers also include firms from Kazakhstan (7%), China and India (4%), as well as the US, Armenia, Japan, Belarus and Italy (2% each).
There are some 80 international brands, which in 2022 put on hold their activities in Russia. The group includes both fashion brands and other retail categories, such as household goods, grocery, restaurants, cosmetics, jewellery and accessories.
As of December 2022, 14 international retail holdings (representing 23 brands) announced plans to leave Russia for good, while 25 retailers (27 brands) just put their local activities on hold, retaining their stores, but closing them for the time being.
Twenty-two foreign retailers transferred their Russian subsidiaries to new legal entities, selling the assets either to local buyers, or to companies from China, Turkey or Arab countries. These subsidiaries (representing 31 brands, including not yet re-opened outlets) have resumed their local activities under either previous or new names.
